December 4, 2002. Sky Optics has secured 20 spaces on a bus tour from Adelaide to the sea side

town of Ceduna which is located in the path of totality for the sunset eclipse. The ground trip in Australia

will include bus transportation, hotel stay and some meals. Price is $400 Canadian per person twin share

from Adelaide. Air fare to and from Adelaide is not included (We are looking at group fares right now, so

check back later for more information). Spots are first come first served. A deposit will be required within the next month or so.

CEDUNA TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE EXPEDITION

2nd to 5th December 2002

 

Day 1 (2nd December 2002)

Morning departure from Adelaide on a modern 2000 model, 52 Seater Scania luxury coach. (Air conditioning, video, public address system, reclining cloth seats, seatbelts, onboard restroom, cold water dispenser.) This coach has been booked. The exact time of departure will be determined later, but will be early AM .

Tour of Barossa Valley, the famous wine growing area to the north-east of Adelaide and visit to at least one winery etc.

Lunch not included, but can be purchased locally.

Dinner not included, but can be purchased locally.

Evening visit to the Stockport observatory of the Astronomical Society of South Australia.  At present this houses 18" and 20" telescopes but by the end of 2002, the new 36" telescope should be finished.

Night spent at Clare Valley Motel 


Da y 2 (3rd December 2002)

Light breakfast at Clare motel. Comprises Fruit juice, cereal, fruit salad, toasts & spread, tea or coffee (breakfast included in price).

Travel past the Mt Remarkable National Park (scenic road) to Port Augusta for lunch. (Purchase own lunch)

Proceed to the Streaky Bay area passing close to Iron Knob on the way.  This is a very rich iron ore outcrop and literally the whole mountain is being mined away.  In the Streaky Bay area there are a number of interesting rock formations (eg 'Murphy's Haystack) as well as picturesque scenery.

From there we proceed directly to Ceduna arriving late afternoon. Dinner is provided at the hotel.

Evening at the Ceduna Foreshore Hotel Motel.  


Day 3   (4th December 2002 - Eclipse Day.)

Morning - Full cooked breakfast at the h otel.

Travel to the Radio Astronomy Observatory of the University of Tasmania near Ceduna. (This is an ex Overseas Telecommunications Station with a 30metre dish.) NOT YET FINALIZED.)

Purchase own lunch

General look around the area and attend some of the activities planned by the community for eclipse day.  View eclipse in late afternoon either from the Esplanade just over the road from the motel or at a site in the district if there are clouds or if it is very windy at the coast.

Dinner and accommodation at the hotel as per the previous day.


Day 4 (5th December 20 02)

Cooked breakfast at the hotel and then departure for the return trip to Adelaide.  We will return direct so that you may connect with late afternoon flights.

Purchase own lunch at Port Augusta on the return trip.

The return from Port Augusta is via a different route, down the eastern side of Spencer Gulf passing close to Port Pirie, a major industrial port.

We arrive in Adelaide in the late afternoon and you are returned to your Adelaide hotel or taken to the airport as appropriate.
